Mike Martin has a new favourite Argentine…

A word of praise for Horacio Marcelo Elizondo, the South American referee of the Switzerland v South Korea match on Friday evening in Hanover.

For one thing, Alexander Frei was onside when the ball was played in the build-up to his decisive goal in the 2-0 Swiss win. But Elizondo did well to ignore his assisstant’s flag as the ball was initially played backwards and only came to Frei after being played by a South Korean defender. For two reasons, the linesman’s flag should not have been raised. How good to see a referee take responsibility and give the benefit of the doubt to the attacking team for a change.

South Korea only have themselves to blame for conceding the goal. Frei was right to play to the whistle rather than the flag, and the Korean protests were as much a result of their embarrassment as any feeling of injustice.

Switzerland are a very capable side and have a favourable Round 2 match against Ukraine on Monday night to look forward to. Their potential quarter final could be against Italy, a team they held to a 1-1 draw in a friendly in Geneva on 31st May.
