Argentine superstar Juan Román Riquelme admits he is so desperate to re-join Boca Juniors that he’s offered to play a whole season without wages.

The 29-year-old, who has recently been linked with moves to Atlético Madrid and Tottenham Hotspur was the catalyst as Boca won the Copa Libertadores last season.

The former Barcelona player was sent on loan to his boyhood club for a four-month stint after falling out-of-favour at current club Villarreal.

After Tottenham confirmed a £10m bid, Román made it clear that his heart was set on a return to La Bombonera, where he is idolised by supporters.

Boca officals have said they will open talks with Villarreal later this week, though potential stumbling blocks remain over the transfer fee and Riquelme’s wages over the remainder of any possible contract. Earlier talks failed after Boca were unable to match the midfielder’s wage demands, but the two parties are hopeful of agreeing a deal.

  1. Hats off to the guy, he’s gone up in my estimation. I would love to have a player in our side (spurs), who just wants to play for the club without wages. There a thousands of us watching week in and week out, who feel exactly the same way, unfortunately we lack the ability to do so.All we ever ask of players is commitment and effort, its so little for such huge reward, and this guy answers every Boca fans dream..well done you!
