Why is there such a dearth of English talent in the Premier League?

Watch Wayne Rooney on his day and you will see his incredible passion and his bewildering talent. Never can he be accused of not having heart.

Manchester United have suffered several defeats this season. On each occasion they have lost, they were without Rooney.

Now take a minute to reflect back on the Man Utd-Arsenal encounter, and tell me how many English men were playing. The answer was five. How many were playing for Arsenal? Just one, and that was the scarcely used Justin Hoyte, who has barely progressed as a defender during his time at the Gunners.

The Roo Effect
Man Utd have not lost when Wayne Rooney has been involved either as a starter or coming off the bench and won on all five occasions in which he has scored in the Premier League. He has been absent in all four of the games United have lost in the league so far this campaign.

This is proof of what Rooney does for Manchester United. Wenger’s foreign policy, clever as it might be, using the ‘no limit to foreigners’ rule, is not flawless. There is also clear evidence that English talent does exist and can become great if properly nurtured and utilised.

Arsenal paid a seven-figure sum for Theo Walcott, but he is not getting much of a chance. Paying so much for a talent like Walcott, who was earlier in the season being linked with a loan move to various clubs, tells you something is very wrong with the amount of gifted English youth on offer.

If the FA wants a successful national team, then the mooted cap on foreigners must be brought in. Wenger must give the likes of Theo Walcott a chance, bring in more English talent and nurture them as he does with his ‘foreign legion’.

How many of the top four clubs are producing English talent and giving them a chance? None apart from Manchester United. Now look at the rest of the Premier League: which clubs can be said to be regularly producing home-grown talent? Probably only Middlesbrough. Is that seriously it?

It’s time for the FA and Fifa to work to put a cap on the number of foreigners playing in the top-flight and have the clubs produce more home-grown talent. That talent can then be used in the national side and, just maybe, the English as a nation might have something to celebrate from football for the first time in decades.

Foreigner cap a wise idea?

  2. Please do not forget Justin Hoyte played for Arsenal, we know he had a bad game on the day, but he is at least English!!!

  3. How many English players that came through the ranks did Man U have out there on Saturday?
Wes Brown………wow i wish we had a defender that good lol.

Another article of xenophobic claptrap embellished with a spreadsheet (must’ve been a wet playtime eh?)

if you MUST have a dig at The Arsenal to enrich your life, please come up with something original not to say relevant.

  4. Please research before you write an article.
Arsenal, although admittedly perform badly, did in fact have Justin Hoyte in the side who is English. It would be great to have an Arsenal side full of English players but Arsenal fans, as well as all true club fans, want to watch a winning team. Kolo Toure cost Arsenal £500,000. Compare that to Woodgate and Ferdinand and who got the better player and role model. Rooney is an exceptional player who comes along once in a while but has he truly lived up to expectations? One good game in 10 is not world-class, where as Ronaldo is. But I forgot he is foreign.

  5. I respect your point of view and agree with some of what you say, but do you not think it would be better to set a minimum number of English players, so that you aren’t limiting the clubs’ ability to important quality foreign players (and further pushing up the price of good English players).

Also, Man United haven’t really produced good English players for a decade. Where do you stand on Clubs like United, Spurs and West Ham who do make an effort to sign (overpriced) English players.

Also, Man City deserve credit for bringing through some good English youngsters…I’m a Man United fan and can’t believe I just wrote that!

  6. So, England would produce better footballers if competition for places was reduced..Doesn’t make sense does it ?

Now if english players were prized more competetively, I’m sure they would get more chances.

After introducing limits on foreigner players ..the likes of Darren Bent would probably be worth 40 million.

And btw , I don’t remember England producing world beating teams in the 70’s and 80’s when foreigners were from Scotland and Ireland.

Wake up and smell the reality

  7. this article is bull, no teams apart from utd producing english players???? who of their england current england internationals have they produced??? what a idiot! they bought their english talent for rediculous sums of money. arsenal are doing much more, true not many of their england products make the first team and ones that do are greedy and move on (cashley cole) but we have produced much more succesful english players than utd recently (cole, sidwell, bentley to name but a few) and most of our youth is english, so mr. know eff all who wrote this article, you look like a idiot manc fan who only became a fan last season and before that probably supported chelski. well done on a brilliant well researched article. muppet

  8. an incredibly narrow minded article. lets go back to the gold old days when post 66 english sides were full of english players and the national team went on to dominate the world cup and european championships. utter crap.

  9. What a terrible, stupid and uninformed article. Can you tell me exactly WHAT English talent Man Utd have produced since the Beckham Scholes era? Wes Brown!?! You talk about Wayne Rooney, but if I remember correctly didn’t Man Utd pay £31 million for him at 18 years old making him the most expensive teenager in history…or perhaps you mean Rio Ferdinand, oh wait, didn’t Man Utd pay £33 million at the time the most expensive British footballer in history…or perhaps you mean Michael Carrick, errr £18 million from Tottenham…or Owen Hargeaves, oh no, they paid £17 million for him. So that’s £99 million on 4 players. They haven’t produced anyone through the ranks in over 10 years, in fact they pay over the odds for all of their English players, out pricing everyone else and effectively ruining and inflating the English transfer market for everyone else.
In that time Arsenal have produced Ashley Cole, David Bentley, Steven Sidwell, James Harper, Francis Muamba, and educating Upson Pennant etc.
Chelsea bought all theire English players, mostly over the odds, J. Cole, Lampard, A.Cole, Wright-Phillips £24million! and have produced J Terry in the last 10 years, Liverpool have produced two in Carragher and Gerrard.
You really shouldn’t post such inaccurate and stupid articles.

  10. I agree fully with you..! the rest of the comments are just piffle probably lab/lib goons.

Its is quite clear there are to many foreign players in the English Premiership.

It was once brilliant without them and can still be
if the runners of this sport kept the English Premiership partially English. At my last look it was near 50/50 from 950+ players, that is
pitiful and needs some serious reckoning

    Keep up the good work.

  11. Cap on foreigners necessary to curb the lack of English talent — Footballing World…

An interesting argument. Rooney’s influence on Man Utds form is regularly overlooked. But the possibility of capping the amount of foreigners seems unlikely considering the current situation……
