Arsenal

Player Ratings: Arsenal

Manuel Almunia 6
Not at fault for any of the four goals and had little else to do in terms of testing saves or goalmouth action.

  • Intrepid Liverpool ensure Arsenal fall short again

  • Kolo Toure 6
Competent throughout at right-back but an incredibly costly loss of concentration immediately after Arsenal had equalised gave the referee little option but to award a penalty.

    William Gallas 6
Defensively solid but failed to offer much in the way of strong captaincy or leadership to the rest of the back four who were often overwhelmed.

    Phillipe Senderos 5
The weak link in Arsenal’s defence was exposed by Liverpool’s forward play. At fault for the crucial first half equaliser when he lost Hyypia and then gave Torres far too much room as the hosts took the lead.

    Gael Clichy 7
An efficient runner who offered an additional outlet up the left flank while defending astutely.

    Emmanuel Eboué 5
It’s difficult to determine whether Eboué is better as a defender or midfielder, but recent form suggests he isn’t particularly effective in either position. Eboué’s hunger to burst down the right was satisfied when placed in midfield, but his delivery was poor.

    Abou Diaby 7
Arsenal have had the fewest shots on goal of any of the remaining eight sides, but Diaby clearly wasn’t afraid to shoot on site and benefited with an opportunistic effort in the first half that caught Reina out.

    Mathieu Flamini 6
A huge loss to Arsenal when he was substituted in the first half - he has been their star this season and covers more distance than any of his team-mates.

    Cesc Fàbregas 5
There is much work to do on Fàbregas’s game. His final ball was frequently wayward and delivery from set-pieces dreadful. After impressing in Milan, Fàbregas was ineffective at Anfield.

    6
Another midfielder who failed to influence the match in any significant fashion; Liverpool quashed his creative qualities well.

    5
Often looked uninterested and apathetic, and wasn’t in the right frame of mind when he missed a fantastic one-on-one opportunity when Arsenal were trailing 2-1. Eventually scored an easier chance but his overall performance was below par.

    Substitutes
Gilberto 5 Did little to suggest he will be retained by Arsenal.
6 Stunning assist as he ran through the Liverpool defence.
Robin Van Persie 5 Both thighs were heavily bandaged so his impact was always going to be limited.

    2. What a load of tosh about Gallas. What does leadership and captaincy have to do with Senderos playing like a lobotomised monkey? The utter thickness of people trying to slate Gallas for some supposed deficiency in his leadership skills is pathetic.

Just face facts that he is the only defender in our back four that doesn’t make a complete cock-up once a month.
