Grant’s brief but tumultuous rendezvous with Chelsea ends

Avram Grant has been booted out of Chelsea after just eight months. After Chelsea's most successful season in Europe and a fantastic run of form at the season's climax, has Grant been unfairly treated?

has been sacked by Chelsea after just eight months in the job

has been sacked by Chelsea despite reaching the final and finishing runners-up in the league to Manchester United.

The Israeli lasted less than a year at the club and many expected owner Roman Abramovich to give the coach time to assert his own authority over the squad.

But the short-termism which is rife within football has struck again at Chelsea, with Abramovich ridding of his third coach - Claudio Ranieri and being the others.

Despite Arsenal and Manchester United demonstrating the success of sticking to one manager over a prolonged period, the Russian saw defeat to Manchester United in Moscow as the final straw, with the repercussions from John Terry’s penalty miss seemingly unending.

Frank Rijkaard has been installed as immediate favourite to replace Grant having recently left Barcelona. His excellent grasp of English and attacking style of football are plus points, especially as Abramovich is keen on transforming Chelsea’s image as a boring side. Dutchman Rijkaard won two La Liga titles and the with Barcelona but struggled in his final two years.

After Chelsea’s most successful season in Europe and a fantastic run of form at the season’s climax, has Grant been unfairly treated? Did Chelsea fans want him to remain or was he simply a copycat of Mourinho? And who should be next in at Stamford Bridge?

  2. Thank you Avram. You took us much further than I expected. No to Rijkaard and Ten Cate can go too. Steve Clarke, please stay and provide continuity for Laudrup and Zola. What a dream team that would be.

  4. A bit of a surprise. Decided more time.

If Terry had scored would he really still have been sacked?!

  5. Cant say i was surprised to hear the news yesterday. And personally i dont think he was ever going to last long in the hot seat. And im not surprised Rijkaard has been made favourite for the vacancy. Im not convinced by the match though. Chelsea are a very structured team, built and designed to play a certain way. Rijkaard simply couldnt change the football on display overnight, as the players arent at his disposal to do so. Im also not convinced that his relaxed style to training and preparation would suit the english regime. Thats why personally, i think Mancini would be a better option for Chelsea.

  6. Avram Grant takes Chelsea further than ever in the Champions League and loses his job because Terry slipped on his penalty shot. This makes no sense whatsoever, the game ended on madness, fate, pure luck for MAN U. Call it what you will. But surely Grant would have kept his job had Terry converted this penalty shot. So what is there to conclude, he is a lesser coach because of a wet ground and lesser kleat traction? This is the most unfair firing I’ve been witness to.
