During the transfer window there haven’t been many big name signings within the top four. Granted just this week Liverpool signed Robbie Keane at a somewhat extortionate price, but barring that it has been relatively quiet.
Arsenal have brought in two youngsters, in the form of Samir Nasri and Aaron Ramsey. Chelsea have brought in an aging playmaker and an unheard of right back (Deco and Jose Boswinga respectively). Manchester United have yet to make a signing apart from the two youngsters they have brought in from their feeder club, Fluminese. Liverpool have added depth to what they feel is an almost perfect team (despite not winning the league for near on two decades).
In the week that Peter Kenyon came out and told the clubs outside the top four to spend, it has occurred to me how well Tottenham and Manchester City have splashed their cash.
Spurs, now run by Juande Ramos, have sold no less than 6 players to rival Premier League teams this transfer window. On the other hand, the Spaniard has brought in 4 class acts to fill the places of the ex ‘bit-part’ players. these new players include:
The tenacious Luka Modric who can play on either wing and caused every defence that he came up against at euro 2008 trouble.
Giovanni dos Santos, a similar player to Luka Modric, but he has one of the best left foots in the world. Furthermore he is only 19 and could be moulded to be one of the best left wingers on the continent.
John Bostock, a young central midfielder. A gritty Brit who has a great career ahead of him. Signed from Crystal Palace after being the youngest ever player to make a league start for the eagles.
David Bentley, another winger, and arguably the best of the three. He exhibited his class and skill in the Premier League last year and it earned him an England call up. He still has a long career ahead of him and will probably be England’s first choice right midfielder in the future.
Finally Paul-Jose Mpoku, an unheard of 16 year old signed from Standard Liege (Tottenham’s feeder club) who also has a promising future ahead of him.
Manchester City haven’t sold as many players, but instead Mark Hughes has just signalled his intentions with two big name signings, adding to those players already at the club.
They were mightly unfortunate last year with the loss of Valeri bojinov, just 20 minutes into his debut. This was partly to blame for their impotency and therefore the lower than expected league position. To partner the young Bulgarian, who has returned to full fitness, Hughes has gone for the Brazilian international Jo. Jo compliments Bojinov as he is alot more of a threat in the air than the 22 year old, and the combination could prove lethal next season. Their most recent signing, that of Talel Ben-Haim for an undisclosed fee could allow the blues to play with 3 at the back and still employ 5 in the middle, with 2 up top. It could prove a massive hit, with Dunne, Richards and Ben-Haim all world class centre backs. I still don’t feel that this is the end of Hughes’ spending though, with the resources he has available to him it would be crazy not to use them.
Both clubs are very similar. They both underachieved last season, although Tottenham did win the League cup, getting a back route into Europe. With failure to succeed came the harsh sacking of Erkison at City, and their over expecting chairman could prove their downfall. This season, if one of the two can’t break into the top four, they should both occupy 5th and 6th. I just can’t see any other team coming close. Peter Kenyon watch out, these could be the two to prove you wrong.
Jonathon Craigie believes Rafa Benítez has finally found the key to securing Premier League glory for Liverpool.
Fabio Capello's reign began slowly but England have since shone in World Cup qualifying, a return to the days of Sven-Goran Eriksson when progressing into major tournaments was always a facile task.
Jonathan O'Shea looks at the English quartet's chances of progressing into the knockout stages of the Uefa Cup.
How important is Javier Mascherano for Liverpool? Chakrit Narula believes the all-action Argentine could be a future captain following his terrific impact since arriving at Anfield.
Any reason why the proposterous and unsubstantiated claim: “Why Spurs and Man City will knock Arsenal and Liverpool out of the top four” doesn’t actually feature in this article (other than being proposterous)? Just realised, to get hits. Damn, I fell for it.
Absolutely.
And Joey Barton will win Player Of The Year,
Ronaldo will sign a 10 year contract with Man Utd
Chelsea will sign Robbie Savage
Newcastle will merge with Sunderland
Footballers will stop dating page 3 girls
and Fabio Capello will make Titus Bramble captain!
so when Arsenal sell players it’s a disaster, when Spuds sell them it’s great ransfer dealing? Remember, these are players they stupidly bought in the first place (and most likely paid over the odds for, as they have this time).
Capello’s made everyone else captain, whynot Bramble?
Yep. another story with a completely sensationalist and unrelayed headline purely to get hits for a piss poor site.
Sportingo and Caughtoffside have some serious competition.
I dont think that Spurs winning a cup last year is “getting a back route into Europe” (would you say the same to Portsmouth?). Getting into Europe via the fair play lge (which we were top of) could be called a back door to Europe…..
You are obviously an idiot, You state that Spurs or Man City will knock Liverpool or Arsenal out this coming season …. then you ramble on to say “Arsenal have brought in two youngsters, in the form of Samir Nasri and Aaron Ramsey….”; which is true BUT then you go on to say “….Giovanni dos Santos, a similar player to Luka Modric, but he has one of the best left foots in the world. Furthermore he is only 19….”; is that not also young!! So its good to be 19 in Spurs BUT bad if you are 21 and in Arsenal?? Stop writing crap!!
I am a City fan so very pleased to read this. However I think it is wildly inaccurate.
Dunne, Richards and Ben-Haim world class????
Richards might be in time, but you must then consider most centre-backs in the EPL world class then?
Consistency is the key to success, thats why we will se Arsenal lift the trpphy this year.
First of all I would like to make clear that I am a City fan. I am as near as you will get to being an optimistic City fan. We’re a despondent lot, generally.
However, we have zero chance of getting in the top 4. the top 4 are so far ahead of us. Jo and Ben Haim (not sure when he became world class)are not going to turn us into world beaters. I doubt we will even finish in the top half of the table if we don’t get a new left-back, right-winger and combative midfielder.
I hope you are right about Bojinov. I have high hopes for the lad. He’s very highly talented. I just hope he recovers from his ACL injury.
Thanks for taking the time to write the article. I don’t necessarily agree with you but at least you took the time to write your opinion.
Enjoy the upcoming season.
Yawn…I wish i had a pound for every time a spurs fan has said that they will finish above arsenal. In fact they havent managed it for 14 years. Mid table obsurity becons again for spurs. Here is an interesting fact. Comparing league position of the two clubs over the 16 years that the premier league has been in existance, Arsenal has finished a total of 100 places above tottenham over that period. thats quite alot.
Worst writing ever
what about gomes for tottenham?
Jose Boswinga… unknown? I dont think so… do u know anything
Peter Kenyon is a tool
Spurs might want to concentrate on finishing in the top half of the table before indulging any other little pipe dreams.
jo is 21
Jose Bosingwa unheard of? Not to anybody who knows anything of football outside the premier league. The headline was a joke, but that was the icing on the cake only the second paragraph in.
Had to see what kind of a website would come up with a headline like that, now I know. Everton? Aston Villa? I think they’ll have something to say about where City and Spurs end up.
If Robbie Keane is overpriced, what the hell does that make the overrated Bentley (More like Lada)?
Dont worry about Spurs, Villa, Everton and City. Its Portsmouth who have had one of the best transfer windows. This article is shite. Man City Qualified for Europe through the fair play league!!
fact ….spurs are seriously buying for the future
fact ….new players are all quality
fact…..we have been underacheiving as a club
fact…..this season investment in players is although difficult
to acheive in the modern game is as wise a buying programme as poss…
no point in scoring cheap points at arsenal…
on the park is where it counts

The funny thing was that I yesterday
wrote a short mail to another website
suggesting a new nickname for David
Bentley: “David Lada von Bentley,”
indicating that he is both inconsistent and overrated. Mr Lada
von Bentley is at best a good player, but not a great player. The
best thing is just to ignore his silly remarks of being new Gascoigne etc. Remember that silence is
the most perfect scorn.
Spike youre too right..
Lame article and site.
The top 4 will be the same, Everton have a better chance than Manc or Spurs.
I feel Manu will still be the team to beat but this time Arsenal and Liverpool will be stronger…unless Rafa starts rotating again.
Defo…same top 4. Sneaky feeling Arsenal will do something special…as long as they sign a DMF.
I’m with Spike on this one. And the line about “one of the best left FOOTS” says it all for me, apart from the foolishness of the author. Get a job, broer.
This article is shyte..i should kill myself for reading it. you should find a day job because this is not going to cut it. i hope someone didn’t pay you for this crap!
Yet another yid column oh there’s a surprise!!!
Ben-Haim a world class centre back!!!!!! ahahahhahah
MORAY, you’re comment only cement what an idiot you have to be to support Arsenal. The reason why you are getting jip over the players you’ve sold is simple. You’ve sold 2 of your best performers from last season in Flamini & Hleb, you’ve sold all your holding players in Gilberto & Flamini and finally sold our only other experienced goalie in Lehmann leaving Almunia & Fabianski between the posts. You’ve not yet purchased anyone worth replaceing these players and instead, have bought a kid who plays down the right and failed massively to impress at the Euros. Spurs have only sold players they either have no need for or feel able to replace. Notice how we flat out refuse, despite all the pressure, to sell Berbatov until we are ready. Tainio, Malbranque, Keane to be replaced by Bentley, Modric & Dos Santos, anyday. Gardner & Chimbonda to be replaced by Woodgate & Hutton, yes please. Robinson with Gomes? Well OK, I guess so.
“Remember, these are players they stupidly bought in the first place (and most likely paid over the odds for, as they have this time)”
Hmmmm….
Robinson cost £1.5M sold for £3.5M
Malbranque cost £2M sold for £7M
Chimbonda cost £4.5M sold for £4M
Tiano cost £0 sold for £4M
Keane cost £7M sold for £20M
Perhaps my maths isn’t as good as yours but I that a £23.5 million profit. I would say that shows that Spurs did anything but overpay for those players.
Also, whether Bentley is overrated by you or not doesn’t matter. The fact is he’s got a good premiership track-record and his performances for Blackburn lat ast year were second to none. Add to that the fact he is only 23 and the £15 million price tag is not holy unrealistic. £20 million for Robbie Keane is. That is extortion for a 28 year old who’s never played in a major competition either club or international level. Hell, he was on the subs bench a couple of sreasons back being outplayed by Defoe!
Moray, with the exception of Keane, all the other players we’ve sold were not going to be first teamers this year.
As the article says we’ve replaced bit part players with Quality, bringing us closer to Arsenal in terms of quality within the squad.
You guys are fools if you don’t think we’ve made ground on you, especially with Best mates Bendtner and Adebayour still not making the right nosies about playing together.
Complaceny could be your downfall.
This is a terrible article. What are you thinking.
Whilst I think you have every right to have this opinion, the complete absence of any sort of factual analysis makes you look like a chump. Subjectivity and objectivity are polar opposites.
If any team is going to upset the apple cart it’s Pompey. To ignore them in an article about improving teams spending wisely is unforgivable. No Pro Evo for you tonight and do all your holiday homework before Monday or you won’t get your pocket money.
Yes of course Spurs will get into the top 4 but not this season. There ae too many new feet to break in for that. Next year for the last time of writing! The future is bright, the future is Lillywhite.
Man City have the potential to implode and sack a manager a season. Jo is as risky a signing as they’ll ever be and Ben Haim is hardly world class.
Spurs have the potential, sure. But we hear it every season with them. Last season it was £18 million Darren Bent, before that Berbatov, before that Jenas, Defoe, Keane…
In reality Spurs need alot more than a few fancy names to break the ’sky 4′.
I think ppl underestimate the value of Crouch and the general threat he constantly poses. Perhaps he wasn’t quite good enough for Liverpool ultimately but nevertheless i think he causes defences more problems than Keane does or will. Keane is an old 28 as i think im right in saying he was playing first team football at roughly 16 years of age. For 20 million at 28 is he really going to get any better…? - he definitely won’t get any quicker. Also there is no possibility of the club selling him on for a profit in say 2/3 years time if he’s not quite up to the level of where they want to go. I think this was an incredibly naive buy by Benitez - could u imagine for example Wenger buying a 28 yr old such as Keane for 20m? No is the answer to that question as he usually buys young players that he can make good value on when they hit the 28 mark or over…doesn’t seem like prudent business sense by Liverpool and smacks of the kind of desperation Keegan might have employed when trying to win the league in his first spell as manager at the BarCodes. I’m not comparing Keegan to Benitez or claimin’ i know more than the Spaniard…but if we (Manchester City) had paid 10million for the 28 year old Keane i would have been annoyed let alone 20million!
That said as a City supporter i think we’re still quite a way off the glass ceiling of the top 4 - and the UEFA Cup playin’ teams from down amongst the deadmen at European outposts will if we progress cripple our thin resources/squad. You don’t only need a strong first team to catch them up you almost need two and a half teams squad wise of genuine quality - we don’t even have a superb first team at the moment and as a city fan pointed earlier on here we are in desperate need of 3 first choice players in a defensive mid, right winger and left back (Ball/Garrido; Hamann/Fernandes; and no one except for the kid Etuhu on the right wing are simply not quite up to it or old and slow.)
I think if we get a strong, pacey left back we could have possibly the best defensive 4/unit in the Prem. (if they stay fit…with excellent back up too in Ben Haim, Nedum Onuoha etc) however i do believe that Joe Hart is the most overrated player in the country at the moment and his naivety, youth and uncertainty could really undo us if we don’t get a competent older keeper.
I think many people underestimate the gap between the top 4 and the rest - even before a ball is kicked the top 4 are light years ahead of everyone else because they are all massive worldwide brands, and probably make more out of a single Champions League game than a club in 5-20 do in 5 or 10 league games. Even when Everton made it 3/4 years ago they depressingly got knocked out in the qualifying round and had a awful seaon in comparison the year later has they couldn’t sustain it because they just don’t like the other 16 “also rans” have the resources to make their long term competition sustainable.
Oh well, this time 10 years ago we were contemplating competing in the third tier of English football for the first time in our history and a home game against Blackpool at Maine Road. I was at the game as a 15 year old in a crowd of over 32,000 thinking will we ever come back, and esp. when we were something like 12th at Christmas. We’ve come a long way but we’re still miles away from achieveing anything like our Great sides of the 60s and 70s.
Im a spurs fan but this article is complete tosh..this quote just sums it up..’with Dunne, Richards and Ben-Haim all world class centre backs’ are you on drugs?!
I think its more like spurs and everton who are more likely to break the top 4 man c have no chance.
I have to agree, rather a poor article.
As a Spurs fan I have to agree with you: I would be talking with a pinch of salt, however, and at least try to explain that this coach is top-notch, and has oodles of confidence in his ability - which is why he was prepared to see Keane and Berbatov leave, as he ‘makes a team’ rather than buying 11 galacticos and hoping they perform. I would have mentioned his tactical nous, and his audacious use of substitutions, with an attacking bent, when having to chase a game.
As for Man Citeh, their saving grace is that Mark Hughes is one of the best of the younger British managers around, and the number of decent players who have come through the ranks. Other that, they haven’t been as free-spending as expected, largely due to Shinawatra’s naughtiness at home.
I don’t write ArseScum off; LiverScouse look, at the moment, the most vulnerable of the Big Four, but Rafa’s pretty shrewd and has been accumulating youngsters that could suddenly explode into brialliance. it ain’t gonna be easy.
As a City fan I wish I could agree with you…. but I can’t. I predict we will finish a creditable 6th and qualify for the UEFA Cup by right. Whether that is enough for Dr. Thaksin and/or Dr. Thaksin still has his freedom is another matter !!
FIRST OF ALL IM A CITY FAN TOP FOUR I DOUBT BUT JUST A COUPLE OF POINTS. MART THE PORTSMOUTH FAN CITY QUALIFIED VIA THE FAIR PLAY WHICH IS NOT THE BEST WAY AS YOU KNOW WINNING THE CUP WOULD HAVE BEEN BETTER BUT YOU SHOULDNT TAKE IT AWAY FROM US WE WERE NEXT IN LINE IN THE FAIR PLAY AND DESERVE THE REWARD, ROBBIE KEANE IS NOT OVERPRICED AT 20 MILLION I WOULD LOVE TO SEE HIM IN A CITY SHIRT 20 MILL IS SPOT ON. THERS NO REASON TO SAY SPURS OR CITY COULDNT BOTH FINISH IN THE TOP 4 BUT LETS NOT SPECULATE LETS WAIT AND SEE, PLUS I THINK EVERTON, VILLA, AND POMPEY MIGHT HAVE A SAY IN WHO FINISHES IN THE TOP FOUR. ONE MORE THING I CAN SEE BOTH ARSENAL AND LIVERPOOL NOT DOING THE BUSINESS THIS YEAR LIVERPOOL JUST DONT LOOK AS GOOD AS WHEN RAFA HAD HIS ASSISTANT PAKO AYESTARAN AND ARSENAL JUST DONT HAVE THE CLASS OF YEARS GONE BY IN MY HUMBLE OPINION,THEY STILL HAVE CLASS BUT NO ONE TO CARRY THE TEAM WHEN THINGS GET TOUGH EG BERGKAMP,HENRY, OF COURSE FABREGAS IS CLASS AND IM A BIG FAN OF NASRI BUT I DONT THINK NASRI WILL BE READY STRAIGHT AWAY. PLUS YOU CANT SELL YOUR BEST PLAYERS WHEN YOUR A TOP CLUB (HLEB) I HOPE ARSENAL DO WELL THOUGH BECAUSE THEY ARE THE BEST FOOTBALLING TEAM IN THE WORLD I COULD WATCH THEM ALL DAY. IM ONLY 20 WOULDNT THINK IT AFTER THIS RAMBLE ANY1 WANTS TO PICK UP ON MY POINTS DO SO AND REMEMBER I WASNT ATTACKING ANY1S TEAM ITS JUST MY OPINION.

So many teams in the premiership this season are building decent balanced squads so im pretty sure this season will one of the toughest in a long time. Consistancy, fitness and good leadership will play big parts this season. Being a mancity fan, I like everyone was just waiting for the wheels to fall off after a great if on many occasions lucky (but they all count) start to last season. With a few injuries in vital areas and no real alternatives on the bench, city went from top four form to relegation form in the space of a month in early 2008. SVE inability then to hold his side together showed his managerial frailties for all to see (hes still a nice bloke tho!). Mr Ramos at Spurs however was doing exactly the opposite and that I think will be maintained and Spurs will be biting plenty of arses this season.
As for top 4 ,I dont think there`s going to be any clear divide soon, teams like WBA and Hull aint going to concede like Derby did so not so many easy points.
So article not so stupid after all (spurs defo top 6 and hope Mr Sparky can hold the blues together when the going gets tough) and im pretty sure there will be plenty of suprises before close of play 2009………Ps if Valeri Bojinov gets his fitness and confidence back and stays injury free this guy has a great football brain and is simply a VERY talented player.
I SEE WHERE YOUR COMING FROM MAX THATS WHY THE HEADLINE CONTAINS ”HAVE THE POTENTIAL” AND DOESNT SAY SPURS OR CITY WILL. THE WORLD CLASS THING, PLAYING FOR YOUR COUNTRY DOES NOT MEAN YOU ARE WORLD CLASS FOR INSTANCE SAN MARINO INTERNATIONALS ARE NOT WORLD CLASS. OUT OF THOSE 3 DUNNE IS WORLD CLASS, RICHARDS SHOULD BE, JURY IS OUT ON BEN - HAIM BUT I HAVE NEVER SEEN ANYTHING TO SUGGEST HE IS WORLD CLASS.
I’m a gooner and it wouldn’t surprise me if Spurs finish above the gunners. Nothing is permanent in this world. The MU empire cannot go on indefinitely without massive injections of cash.A time wiil come when the law of time will see to it.
Good luck to spurs.Watch out.AW you have been warned.
