Wright-Phillips to City, but why?

Shaun Wright-Phillips has re-signed for former club Manchester City but did he return for the lucrative salary or the opportunity of proving himself as a successor to Beckham?

England regular Shaun Wright-Phillips has re-signed for former club Manchester City on a four year deal. The fee of the transfer is believed to be around £9.5 million. But under what pretences has Wright-Phillips re-signed for City? He was reportedly offered deals to join Portsmouth and Everton, so why City?

The adopted son of Ian Wright is going to earn a staggering £80,000 per week at Eastlands. Twice what would have been offered at Everton due to their strict wage budgeting, which sees Arteta and Yakubu; top earners, on roughly £40,000 per week. This greed could be a part as to why Shaun chose City. Portsmouth would probably have been able to finance a wage of around £50,000 per week (his wages at Chelsea) with all their new signings this season, but even that would dent their wage structure quite considerably.

Again, why City? With the teams future resting on the finances of a potential crook in the form of Thaskin Shinawatra, it’s not as if it is the most stable of clubs to join at present. Their form in both league and cup competitions has been distinctly average. A quarter final appearance in the League Cup last year being their best cup run since a semi-final appearance in 1981. On the league front, finishing ninth after having spent nearly £30 million on fresh blood, it must have been seen as a real disappointment, and shows how the club aren’t even the best outside of the top four. Based on last season, it seems both Everton and Portsmouth are stronger and better than Manchester City.

Based on the fact that he has already had a spell at City, could the 26-year-old just simply be rekindling previous loyalty and love for the area? £80,000 per week would have persuaded him to do so! But, to be fair, he did have a nine-year stint at Eastlands (including his time with the youth side).

For whatever reason Wright-Phillips chose City. A few years ago, he looked like he could have emulated Beckham, and it is now apparent that his move to Chelsea has been detrimental on his career. Perhaps a return to Manchester will assist a rebirth in his career, while I don’t think City fans will mind his brief absence for the sake of £12 million, a deal which now seems an extraordinary bit of business.

But your words are obviously more important than what he says about himself,.

  4. Just your usage of the words potential Crook shows your bitterness, Max, you need to grow up & see the truth.

City are on paper way stronger than Everton & Portsmouth not to mention the fact City are bringing in future Superstar & Superstar players, the fact our team is much younger than Portsmouth & Everton also speaks volumes not to mention City is SWP’s birth place.

Sure money plays a part but make that a small part & grow up. muppet.

  5. Several errors in the above article:
Firstly, Wright-Phillips was considered to be on 70,000 a week at Chelsea, not 50,000. Secondly, Manchester City reached the FA Cup Final in 1981, not a semi-final - their two matches against Spurs (one replay) are considered possibly the finest cup final of the period. Finally, Wright-Phillips did not spend nine years at Eastlands. For most of his career City were based at Maine Road.

  7. This guy Collins sounds all bitter and twisted. Why not City? It’s where he came from, the crowds love him, and it’s a better club than everton or pompey. And if you were offered, say, £5 a week to write dross, or £8 a week to write dross, which would you choose.

  8. Max ocollins - You have got to be a bitter Manure fan or you wouldnt come out with such bitter comments about City.

Why wouldnt he come back to City? City made SWP the player he was. Why would he want to go to Portsmouth or Everton.

Despite what all the bitter press are coming out with, City have spent more than any other team in BRITAIN this summer so the finances must be there. What you idiots in the media cant get your head round is that Thaksin has more money (that he can get his hands on) than you think. He also has a lot of rich friends so do one, you idiot

  11. Jesus how bitter are some people. SWP came home ok. I’m sure the salary offers were all around the same but he preferred City.

  13. What a mindless piece of drivel, i would check your facts as to wages and time spent at clubs before writing such anti city garbage if you want any credibility!

But I’m sure your right Jo, Ben Haim, Kompany, Wright phillips, and hopefully Zableta. All joined a financially destitute club that has been brought to its knees by a truly wicked tyrant, you idiot!!!

    Come on the blues.

  15. Manchester City as of late haven’t had the same success as Everton or Portsmouth and their financial future is in the balance. That is why I begged the question as to why he chose City over these other two clubs.

Look at Manchester City as of late, a good win at home to a 10 men West Ham, a poor loss away to Villa first game of the season (a team they should really be beating if they are t have any chance of getting into Europe-not via the back door), and nearly knocked out of UEFA cup football before the first round proper.

That is what has led me to questioning why Wright-Phillips went to City.

    Posted by Max O'Collins | August 30, 2008, 5:12 pm
  16. Sorry, but what have Everton and Pompy got that we don’t? Everton have a lack of funds and seems to be a comunication break down to rival Liverpools last season, and they all speak with a funny acent.

Pompy with a squad of players the size of a small town, even though we have the largest apparently.

what Ian wright can’t be right surely? I mean a team bringing in quality, skillful players, a though no nonsense coaching staff, with a man who is willing to contiually finds funds to make this happen, why wouldn’t he choose us. One of our City faithful have returned, with european experience, started his professional carear with us, finish his carear with us.

    ONCE A BLUE ALLWAYS A BLUE…

  17. And lets look at Everton and Portsmouth shall we to complete the piece…. Portsmouth are bototm of the table and sold one of their best players…While Everton got beat by Blackburn at home…Surely an easier fixture than Villa away… Also if you had bothered to watch the West Ham game you’d have seen that we dominated all the game and had created loads of chances before the sending off….

So why again did you question SWP move to City ?????

  19. Why don’t you get your facts right Mr. Collins!! He is on 55k and not 80 k. He chose City because he knows the fans love him and they are a better bet to succeed than Everton or Portsmouth.

    Posted by william | August 30, 2008, 6:01 pm
  20. if swp is on 80k a week it is the same as he was getting at chelsea.
as for 50k denting portsmouth’s wage structure how much is sol cambell earning? how much was Richard Dunne offered by them.
Everton stronger than city? maybe you should check out their results before writing such drivel.

    Posted by jim | August 30, 2008, 6:23 pm
  21. Everton? Successful? since when? And the “financial crisis” you intimate appears as distant as ever … in fact the opposite could very well be true.

Villa a poor loss? You’re obviously not particularly well informed as a football journo … and I love the “nearly knocked out” of the UEFA Cup bit too … like Utd nearly lost the Champions League Final in ‘99. Total dross.

This type of anti-City garbage is happening far too often. I assume you’re Irish and a red more than likely. Thanks for the opportunity to comment on the drivel you write.

  22. What success have Everton had recently? Or, in fact, since winning the F A Cup in 1995? Everton are financially in a bigger mess than City and are looking primarily at loan signings so going there would have been a retrograde step.Their results have also been very poor this season. As for Portsmouth, why play in front of 20000 fans in a ramshackle “stadium”, when the offer of playing in front of twice as many in one of Europe’s top arenas is there? When talking about the “potential crook” of Thaksin, think of that pensioner in charge of Pompey. He’s hardly “potentially” whiter than white is he? How many times has his integrity been questioned over agents and ropey transfer deals? City have the brightest young (and British) manager in the game, have money to spend, and are attracting top players. The media can’t cope with this. Their comfy slippers are being thrown away. Get used to it.Who is this two-bob Max O’Collins, anyway? Is he on work experience? Broaden your outlook…

  24. Why can’t people just leave us alone? I’m really sick of people jumping all over my beloved club at the slightest drop of the hat, or in this case, for really no reason at all. Perhaps SWP came home because he loves the club that brought him up from nothing to a player that was a £21million transfer to Chelsea? No…that wouldn’t make sense at all…

  25. We were battering west ham anyway and we spent the last 20 mins of the game with 10 men cos etuhu went off injured. We could be bottom of league……………why would he not join city

    Neves wants to join city
    Zabaleta wants to join city
Apparently Ronaldo wants to join city

They may never play for us but the fact is they know what they are talking about and you havnt got a clue.\

Irish name…got to be a rag!!!

    Posted by thrillhammer | August 30, 2008, 8:31 pm
  26. I know my players, and i have never heard of Neves or Zabaleta. Ronaldo-injury prone, and ageing, he knows there’s easy money to be had at City.

From a neutral’s point of view, you werent batterinig West Ham, you were on top, but if you had put 5/6 past them then yes you were ‘battering’.

Etuhu went off after you were 3-0 up and the game had been put to bed, you know that.

  28. you know your players? youve never heard of thiago neves?

Star brazilian player of the olympics. Never heard of
Zabaleta? Argentinian international sought after by Juventus.

Dont get me wrong, there will be a million players i have never heard of, but i dont come spouting off on here claiming to be well informed.

Might want to do a bit of research before you commit to your opinions.

    Posted by thrillhammer | August 30, 2008, 9:55 pm
  29. Research enough is the fact that City spent 30 million pounds last year and still managed to fail, behind the cash strapped Everton, Portsmouth and Blackburn.

  33. How did they fail? Most points ever for them in the premiership. A squad full of quality players which are still ours.

Cash strapped portsmouth? you wanna look at what they spent last season. Took Moyes years ( moyes is the everton manager in case you were wondering ) to get his team playing like they are. And in case you didnt notice, the manager who got Blackburn playing like they were last season is now employed at city.

I tell you mate, youre bitterness is starting to embarrass you now.

  38. Come on Max, that has to be one of the most questionable articles I have read on this forum.

I’m not even a City fan and find it quite bitter in taste.

You knock your own argument on the head yourself at the very end - Man City ain’t exacly making a loss on this deal when you consider how much Chelsea paid for SWP in the first place!!

  39. Potential Crook! Here’s a middle finger to you for blatant bias!

The Charge was based on make-up evidence presented by, get this, CROOKS! Corrupted Coup-backed, biased investigators who has been dissing him for 5 yrs!

Please do your homework before writing about stuff you obviously doesn’t know anything about!

Heck, you can check my ip address, I live in this bloody country! I know the dirt on Thaksin, and I can vouch for him. He’s a good man, and hasn’t broken any laws. At least not laws that only apply to HIM!

Get it? They make up laws that only applies to him & his family! How can you JUSTIFY that?

  40. Anyone who has a) never heard of Thiago Neves or Pablo Zabaleta (gold medal winner at the Olympics) or b) thinks that last season’s Carling Cup quarter final was City’s best cup run since 1981 isn’t competent to spout half baked opinions about football.

Posted by james kelly | August 31, 2008, 10:08 am
  41. What you don’t get i’m afraid is that city had to spend in the region of 30mil last season to build up a squad that nearly got relegated the season before.whereas everton/portsmouth etc were already established top 10 teams by that point.so which team progressed the most then last season?
by the way my knowledge of international football isnt that hot but even i had heard of thiago neves and pablo zabaleta before they had been linked this summer.

My football knowledge is very poor and I like writing lots and lots of rubbish, sometimes I get lonely you sees! So I need to try and wind Manchester City fans up, gives me a kick because otherwise I get no action…

Also, various sources have reported Wright Phillips has been earning 50 grand/week at chelsea, and then will move on to 80,000 a week at City.

  47. Furthermore to answer other comments, City spent 30 million last season, hence ”On the league front, finishing ninth after having spent nearly £30 million” - referring to last season. This season they have spent closer to 50 million.

  48. City in a cup semi final?

How about 1986? Of course you’ll claim that the Full members Cup doesn’t match your research standards, but that doesn’t bother Chelsea who spouts two wins on their wikipedia page.
