Mascherano, the latest Liverpool legend

How important is Javier Mascherano for Liverpool? Chakrit Narula believes the all-action Argentine could be a future captain following his terrific impact since arriving at Anfield.

There are some things that even the fussiest, “I can count prime numbers backwards” people can’t debate. These phenomena come across us rarely but when they do, they just stand out.  The US foreign policy IS a joke. Angelina Jolie IS the hottest woman alive. Jimi Hendrix WASN’T human. And finally, Javier Mascherano IS, you guessed it, a monster.

As a fanatical Liverpool supporter since I was able to walk, I have had the unbelievable fortune of watching some truly incredible Reds. Robbie Fowler, as he is rightly called, is God. Steven Gerrard is one many fail to find the proper words to describe because he’s just too damn good. While many others have come and gone recently at Liverpool, the sheer dogged determination and hunger of Javier Mascherano is almost unrivalled, bar probably Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher. He is the epitome of Liverpool and will be a true leader for many years to come.

Passion can sometimes be so ironic in football.

Steven Gerrard was taken off for showing too much passion in last year’s Merseyside derby at Goodison, yet Rafa publicly declared it was Stevie’s passion that would be needed prior to kick-off. Mascherano’s sending off at Old Trafford last year seemed to be down to his demonstrable passion. Yes, some may say it was idiocy and not passion. But just look at Mascherano’s refusal to leave the field that day.  His determination and sheer magnetism, was quite frankly, frightening.

And that’s what endears him so much to the supporters. In an age where football is controlled by monstrous paychecks and cars more expensive than a school in my native Bangkok, Mascherano is that breed of player that would die for the shirt he wears.

Many dwell on Maradona’s famous words that Mascherano is even more important than Leo Messi as the highest compliment a player can have. Forget that. All you need to do is watch the passion (oh how ironic it can be) in Mascherano as he ran like a possessed fiend to redeem himself after Tevez’s first goal in Liverpool’s victory over Manchester United last month. Such passion can’t be bought. It can only be uncovered.

So just how lucky are Liverpool supporters to have this gem of a player? He’d fit right into a knitting group of Tommy Smith, Graeme Souness and Phil Thompson, that’s for certain.

  9. Why does it matter how old a fan is? I’m 27, I’m Australian, never been to see a Liverpool match in my life, but that doesn’t make me less of a fan than someone who has a season ticket. In fact, I have a long sleeve home shirt, short sleeve home shirt, grey away shirt and green away shirt and I recently got the Liverpool crest as a tattoo. I remember watching Peter Beardsley, Craig Johnstone, Ian Rush, John Aldridge, John Barnes, Bruce Grobbelaar, and the like, but can’t remember the earlier golden age. Give the guy a break, he made a good point.

  10. I think the last comment is unfair, Robbie and Stevie were\ are awesome players and good comparisons.

I think Robbie still holds the record for the fastest Hatrick in the premier league against the Arsenal.

    Both are true club greats.

  11. you seem to swear at the guy like he has done something wrong to you. Well, things like videos of goals of the past exist so he must of watched a bit of those.
Anyway, sort that head out of yours, and maybe if you gave up jacking off and accusing other people of doing that maybe your head would be better placed you TOSSER

  16. Well well well its is true Marsch is unbelievable … but here is the point Rafa has put together a team of leaders … all capable of leading. Torres, Gerrard, Keane, Benayoun, Alonso, Carra have all worn the armband & definately Babel,Reina,Agger, Skrtel can follow suit … in their respective countries … how many times have U heard the word Mentality being tossed around … THAT is the reason we beat ManU/ Everton & that is the reason we are going to get silverware this season … by the way in monster Marsch we have something no one else has & believe me we will shock a lot of peaople this time around

  17. no need to insult a liverpoolfc fan, whether a season ticket holder or a fan from other part of the world who connects to other reds by watching liverpool matches on the TV. We are all reds and remember “we never walk alone”.
