Should Spurs take a big loss on Darren Bent?
Over the recent years at White Hart Lane, it’s fair to say the club have had more misses than hits in the transfer market.
For every Michael Carrick bought cheap and sold huge, there’s been three Sergei Rebrov’s who cost the club a fortune in losses. Sure, the Spur’s board can point to the sale of Dimitar Berbatov last summer, they certainly made a massive profit on the Bulgarian to fund a swoop for two player’s in Jermaine Defoe and Robbie Keane. However, these are two players that the club had previously at their disposal just a few months earlier.
But any cash Harry Redknapp makes in that deal surely looks set to be offset by loss on Darren Bent who is rumoured to be heading to either Everton or West Ham. It is estimated that the club will lose around £8m on Bent, who cost over £16m when they signed him just a year ago from Charlton Athletic. What kind of business is that? Someone has to take major responsibility for those kinds of losses. A Club like Spurs, where finances are supposedly in good shape but not plentiful, can not afford to take such a hit in just 12 months.
The truth is that Redknapp is in no position to bargain on Bent, who isn’t universally loved by supporters at White Hart lane, despite his relatively strong goals to games return.
For once though, the Spurs board may want to take a leaf out of the financial book of their North London rivals if they ever wish to be on the right end of the maths a bit more often. Only then can Spurs hope to balance the books and use the profits to make further big swoops like the ones for Luka Modric last summer. So is Tottenham’s transfer policy in turmoil? Should they let Darren Bent leave at such a loss?
