It's vaguely absurd that mental illness affects 1 in 4 people at some point in their life, yet remains completely misunderstood by, I would say, the vast majority of the public. As you point out, the macho world of sport seems only to amplify this misunderstanding. Gazza's press treatment and the continually awful Sun's 'Bonkers Bruno' must put the frighteners on any sportsman considering 'coming out' with his problems. That's why Collymore, Tresco and Ronnie O'Sullivan should be lauded rather than derided for their frank portrayals of deteriorating mental health despite professional success. Robert Enke's desperately sad case really should be a watershed moment for the game, but I suspect it won't.
